Mauricio Pochettino says his side are focused on taking maximum points from their remaining five games.

Saints are currently four points off their record Premier League points haul, so will be aiming to make history during the final month of the season.

That task continues with tomorrow’s visit of Cardiff City, a side Pochettino’s men beat 3-0 on Boxing Day.

“It’s really important that, in these last five games, we maintain our very high standards and get the maximum number of points,” the manager told Saints Player.

“It’s clear that we want to win tomorrow – that’s always our target, as I’ve said in the past.

“We beat Cardiff on Boxing Day but, since then, they’ve hired a different manager and they’ve brought in quite a few new players.

“It’s a completely different team that we’ll be facing tomorrow, but our idea never changes: we go out to win.”

In terms of team news, Jay Rodriguez (knee) is ruled out for the next six months while Maya Yoshida (also knee) and Kelvin Davis (back) will too be absent.

Artur Boruc (back) and Gastón Ramírez (ankle) will need to be assessed after missing last week’s trip to Manchester City.

“We still have one more training session to go in order to assess who is going to be playing,” said Pochettino, “so I still haven’t made my decision as to who will play.”

Today’s press conference was dominated, as the last few have been, by questions about Pochettino’s future.

But the manager reiterated that, with 15 points still up for grabs, this is not a time to be speculating.

“It’s no distraction,” insisted Pochettino. “I’m calm.

“We know what the world of football is about, and we’re very accustomed to these rumours.

“The situation hasn’t changed – we still need to finish the last five games of the season, and we need to do as best as we can in them.

“Once they’re done, we can sit down and talk about the future.”
