Dr Gale’s role will focus on colour and pattern psychology to smooth the transition to Saints’ new 2015/16 kit throughout the club and the city of Southampton as part of the #ShowYourStripes campaign.
Dr Gale, who has been a leading figure in colour and pattern psychology for more than ten years, has been brought in by Southampton to oversee the transition to the club’s 2015/16 kits. Despite having never worked in sport before, Dr Gale’s methods are highly respected and the club hopes that, by getting the players fully accustomed to its new kit, it can deliver a tangible on-pitch benefit.
Players and staff at Southampton have been working with Dr Gale for the last week and the club has created a behind-the-scenes documentary as he begins work on his groundbreaking Player Integrated Stripes Strategy. The appointment, and the documentary, is part of the club’s #ShowYourStripes campaign calling for fans to celebrate the famous red and white stripes ahead of the launch of Southampton’s new kit.
The documentary sees the likes of José Fonte, James Ward-Prowse, Maya Yoshida and Jay Rodriguez spend time with Dr Gale in order to learn crucial techniques for integrating the red and white stripes of the new kit into their everyday lives. As part of the campaign, Dr Gale has also spent time with City Councillor Francis Madison as he outlines his vision for the whole of Southampton.
Dr Gale commented: “In the last ten years I’ve established myself as one of the top one thousand colour and pattern psychologists in the world. Despite being a huge fan of the beautiful game, to date my expertise has mostly been used for interior design - I was actually junior colour consultant on DIY SOS for three years.
“My role at Southampton is a crucial one. Where clubs have been going wrong all these years is not fully understanding the complexities players – and fans – face in moving to a new kit. As part of the Show Your Stripes campaign, I have developed the Player Integrated Stripe Strategy, which I believe can deliver 0.1% on-pitch improvement 100% of the time. It’s marginal gains on a massive scale.”
Gareth Rogers, Chief Executive Officer of Southampton Football Club, added: “The launch of a new kit is always a special moment for fans and players alike. The new partnership with adidas for our 2015/16 kits is another step of the journey as the club marches on, so it’s important we take every factor into account.
“The appointment of Dr Gale is an exciting one. Although his methods are untested within the world of football, the strategy he outlined for the Show Your Stripes campaign was both groundbreaking and visionary. Everyone at the club looks forward to working with him.”
Southampton will unveil its new kit ahead of this weekend’s Premier League fixture against Aston Villa at St. Mary’s. In the build up to the game, and to aid their own transition, fans are being asked to share photos of them in their Southampton kit – as well other red and white aspects of their lives! – on social media channels using #ShowYourStripes
