The Saints boss had described the meeting with the Hornets as a big match in the context of the club’s season, and he watched his players deliver a thoroughly impressive display in a comfortable 2-0 win.
"They showed really the importance of the game of tonight,” Koeman told youtube.com/southamptonfc
. “I think from the start in the game we saw an aggressive team playing good football, creating some big chances.”
Koeman’s only complaint was that Saints, who got goals from Shane Long and substitute Dušan Tadić in each half, didn’t win by a greater margin.
“We should have scored more goals before half time than only the first one of Shane Long,” he said.
“But the message to the players in half-time was keep going, try to score the second one and try to press how we press in the first half and I think it was a very good team performance today.
“We should have scored more goals out of the chances and opportunities that we created today. But 2-0 is a good score and a good win.”
