Ryan Bertrand would have no issues with continuing in a more central role after forming part of a new-look defensive line-up in Wednesday’s win over Watford.

The left-back by trade moved to the left of a central back three in midweek where he showed versatility to help the team record a clean sheet and gain a first victory of the New Year.

“Obviously it’s good to win, regardless of the situation,” he said.

Matt Targett took up more of a wing-back role, which left Bertrand to form a trio alongside skipper José Fonte and Virgil van Dijk, handing Saints a solid platform to build from.

“It was alright,” he assessed. “It was left of the three at the back. We have a good understanding of each other and that was a new position but it wasn’t too bad, it worked tonight.

“There was a bit more central duties to do but then, other than that, when we’re on the ball I’m in my left back domain anyway.

“It’s not too bad to pick the right passes from there.”

The win over Watford meant that the first part of two key games highlighted by manager Ronald Koeman was successfully negotiated, and Bertrand is keen to push on from here.

“It’s good to get that win under our belts,” he said. “It was much needed against difficult opposition.

“I think the boys done very well, but we’re not getting carried away yet, there’s still plenty of football to play this season and hopefully we can keep that consistency.

“Every game is a big game, not this week in particular.

“We’re just going to recover, start focusing on Saturday and go out and take it game by game, trying to get as good a result as we can.”
