The striker, signed last month, marked his first appearance in style as he stepped off the bench to score the winning goal in Saints’ victory at Manchester United a fortnight ago.
A minor injury ruled Austin out of the midweek trip to Arsenal, but he says that brief setback has only heightened his excitement for his first run-out at St Mary’s.
“It was disappointing [to miss out], but it was the right thing for me,” Austin says in the new issue of the club’s official matchday magazine, which is available to order online
“It wasn’t worth the risk, given we have two games in a week. I stayed behind and had a couple of good training sessions to prepare for the weekend.
“I feel good and strong, so I just need to get back to where I was. I’m just looking forward to the game now.”
Austin says the support he’s received from the Southampton faithful has added to his hunger for today’s game.
“I think everybody looks forward to making their home debut and I certainly am, especially after the reaction I got not only at Old Trafford but also at the West Brom game (which Austin watched from the stands after signing) – that was brilliant.
“The fans have obviously been very excited that I've come in – it certainly helps scoring after seven minutes of your debut! They've been very good and very welcoming.
“Now I want to show them what I can do and what I've been doing for other football clubs – and that's bringing goals to the team and putting in performances for the rest of the lads.”
