Jake Hesketh believes Southampton Under-21s’ display in the 1-1 draw with Tottenham Hotspur gives them a good foundation to build on for the rest of the season.

Saints ended a run of three straight league defeats with a draw against their Spurs counterparts, going some way to putting their Under-21 Premier League Cup exit in their last outing behind them.

Hesketh’s stunning curling effort had given Martin Hunter’s side the lead, but Nabil Bentaleb’s deflected strike earned the visitors a share of the spoils at St Mary’s.

Despite not being able to hold out for the three points, Hesketh felt Saints had shown real improvement following that exit in the cup.

“It’s definitely a bounce back from a couple of weeks ago in the cup. We were much better, playing more football,” Hesketh told youtube.com/southamptonfc.

“We defended much better as a team. Obviously now it looks like things are starting to click, so hopefully we can get a run of form going and get that win.

“Tottenham are a top team and they had a few first-team players playing, so I think we’ve put a marked down with how we played.

“We’ve got to take that into the Everton game.”

On his wonderful strike, his fourth goal of the season, Hesketh added: “I had one in a similar position in the first half which got blocked.

“I thought that was going near as well, but with the goal I didn’t see a lot on and as soon as I hit it I knew it was going in.

“I hit one near the end quite nicely as well and on another day that goes on too, but these things happen.”
