Virgil van Dijk says Southampton’s defenders feel like it will require something special to score against them at the moment.

Saints extended their run of clean sheets to six matches after triumphing 1-0 away to Swansea City on Saturday afternoon, as they moved up to sixth in the Barclays Premier League.

The side are now one game away from tying the club’s top-flight record of seven successive games without conceding, while the all-time best league mark stands at eight.

Asked to describe what the mentality is like among the defenders when they go out onto the pitch, van Dijk told youtube.com/southamptonfc: "Keep working, keep talking.

“Communication is very important and I think also the confidence between everyone in the team and the understanding is very good and winning makes the confidence grow and at the moment it is very high.

“It needs to be something special for the opponent to score against us. That's the feeling we have. We have six clean sheets in a row now and hopefully we can continue.”

On the victory at the Liberty Stadium, the centre-half added: "We’re very pleased. I think it was a tough game, it's always a tough game against Swansea and I think we coped well with everything.

“We didn't give too much away and there was always an opportunity to score. It was a great goal as well from Longy and we're happy to keep the momentum going.”
