Ronald Koeman believes Saturday’s point against Sunderland could yet prove to be a big one for Southampton.

Virgil van Dijk struck deep into added time to rescue a point for the ten-man hosts, who had José Fonte sent off shortly before Jermain Defoe opened the scoring in the 85th minute.

The result lifted Saints up one place in the Barclays Premier League table, at least temporarily, pushing them into eighth.

Koeman believes it could yet be an important one, with qualification for the Europa League likely to extend at least to sixth position in the top-flight.

“If you don't get any point today then it's more difficult because then it looks like the end of the season is a difficult one, and now still we are close to the rest of the teams for the fight for Europe and that's what we like,” he told Southampton’s official YouTube channel.
