Steven Davis believes the coming games will define Southampton’s ambitions for the rest of the season, adding that the players want to make sure the campaign does not fizzle out.

After a six-match unbeaten run, Ronald Koeman’s side have picked up only a point from their last three games, slipping back to ninth place in the Barclays Premier League table.

With a place in Europe still the target, Davis has underlined the importance of Saturday’s trip to Stoke City, which is followed by a home clash with Liverpool – the two sides immediately above Saints in the table.

“I think the next few games are going to determine where our sort of ambitions are for the season,” Davis told Southampton’s official YouTube channel. “We're still in a relatively good position and want to go and finish the season strongly.

“There's still nine games to play and a lot of points to play for, so we could still have a very successful season.

"The last thing we want is for the season to just fizzle out, and there's still a prize in our sights there for us, if we go and put together a good run.

“That's the ambition and desire of the players to go and do that, and it's important we get some points on the board and get a win as soon as possible, and try and build on that again.”

With the proximity to both Stoke and Liverpool in the table, Davis feels there is some additional weight attached to both fixtures.

"I think so,” he said. “They're important games for us, no doubt. It's important to go into the international break on the back of some good results and we've got two tough games coming now to do that.

“They're both teams that are in decent form, so we know what to expect. It's always a difficult game at Stoke, they're on a good run at this point in time, so we're going to have to be at our best to win the game, but we're confident that we can do that.”
