Matt Le Tissier says the recent rivalry with Liverpool adds extra spice to Sunday’s game at St Mary’s.

Saints and Liverpool find themselves competing for league position as the season draws towards a close with Ronald Koeman’s men going into the game one place above Jürgen Klopp’s side.

And with Southampton to Liverpool being a popular route for some players in recent times, Le Tissier hopes the current Saints can put one over on the Merseysiders this weekend.

“It is a popular fixture and I think it’s become a bit more intense with the amount of players that have left here and gone to Liverpool in the past couple of years,” he told saintsfc.co.uk

With eight games to play, Le Tissier says he’s still enjoying watching Saints battle for a top half position in the table, and doesn’t rule out a late surge into a European qualification spot.

“It’s possible because it’s been a crazy season with teams beating each other,” he said.

“You’ve got Leicester at the top there astounding everyone, so sixth place certainly in terms of the points away from it is not a million miles away, so if we put together another good run like we did in January and February then it is definitely possible.”

And Le Tissier is certainly happy to see Saints targeting another top half finish as the club aims for further improvement.

“It’s nice as a Southampton fan now to actually look at the season and not really worry about the bottom half of the table and instead look at how high we can possibly finish this season,” he said.

“For me, these last couple of years have been a breath of fresh air.”
