Focus turns to Sociedad

After travelling to Spain over the weekend, the First Team was back at Staplewood this morning as the start of the new season moves ever closer.

Saints' 2013/14 campaign officially gets underway at West Bromwich Albion in 12 days' time, though fans will have the opportunity to get a preview of how the side is shaping up this Saturday when La Liga side Real Sociedad come to St Mary's.

Sociedad are currently in England for a training camp, beating Conference North side Histon 8-1 on Saturday ahead of tomorrow night's trip to Norwich City.

Southampton go into Saturday's match on the back of a game against another La Liga side, having played out a goalless draw away at Celta Vigo over the weekend.

And, with tickets for this weekend's 3pm kick-off still available, Kelvin Davis is hoping that a bumper crowd makes its way down to St Mary's to cheer the team on ahead of the big kick-off at the Hawthorns a week later.

"The last game before the start of the season is one where you can come along and watch new signings and the style that we're going to look to play," the Club Captain said after Saturday's game in Vigo.

"I think it'll be a great game for the fans to come and watch. It's an opportunity to see us play at home against top opposition."

Kelvin's thoughts were echoed by his Saints teammate and namesake Steven, who is hoping to end a positive pre-season on a high this weekend.

"I'm sure the fans will get behind us," said Davis. "Like ourselves, I'm sure they will be optimistic about the new season.

"They'll want to come and see how we've progressed over pre-season, and it's a game that every one of the players will look forward to getting back to St Mary's.

"It'll be a good test for us because they had a good campaign in La Liga last year."
