Fonte made 28 appearances across the course of the campaign, starting the final three games of the season having displaced Maya Yoshida at the centre-back.
And the Portuguese says he'll work hard over the next few months to ensure he can hit the ground running for the coming campaign.
Fonte told Saints Player
: "I'm looking forward to next season, and to being a better player and improving to help this club move forward to the next level.
"I was out of the team for a couple of months with a knee injury and then because the guys (fellow defenders Yoshida and Jos Hooiveld) were playing well, but I managed to finish the season, which is pleasing.
"I'm a workaholic – I can't just stop and get fat by doing whatever I want! I'm just going to keep being myself and going to the gym regularly.
"This is my world and my job, so I'll make sure I'm ready when I come back."
Saints rounded off the 2012/13 campaign with a draw against Stoke on Sunday to secure a 14th-placed finish at the end of our first year back in the top flight.
The squad took part in a lap of appreciation after the game, with Fonte delighted that he had the opportunity to carry his month-old son Luca around the pitch.
"It was a great experience and a great feeling," beamed José. "I was a very proud dad, and I hope he's a proud son.
"But we didn't get the win, which was the thing we wanted most to be able to give the fans what they deserve.
"They have been amazing this season and have given us great support throughout, both at home and away, so we wanted to give them three points.
"Unfortunately we couldn't do that, but we'll look forward to the next season now. Hopefully we'll have a better one than we did this season."
