I'm feeling back to my best - Shaw

Luke Shaw says he is feeling in top condition once again having returned to the team for last Saturday’s deserved draw at Manchester United.

The young full-back was laid low by a bout of tonsillitis just before the recent international break, meaning he missed Saints’ home game against Swansea and was ruled out of England’s Under-21 matches against San Marino and Lithuania.

However, Shaw says he is now back on form and is looking forward to this weekend’s visit of Fulham to St Mary’s.

“I’ve picked up a few injuries and illnesses this season, but I’m over them now,” the 18-year-old told saintsfc.co.uk this week.

“I just want to keep fit and working hard, and hopefully I can show that on the pitch. I’m feeling back to my best.

“I had a full 90 minutes on Saturday so hopefully I can get more game-time this weekend.”

Shaw played his part in helping his side secure a draw at the home of reigning champions United last weekend, putting in a strong showing as Adam Lallana’s 89th-minute goal levelled matters in the closing stages.

That was the third time Southampton have scored inside the last few moments of a match this season – something the youngster says is testament to the squad’s improved physical conditioning so far this campaign.

“We’ve all been working hard in training on our fitness so that, when it comes to the latter stages of games, we are fitter and stronger than our opponents,” he said.

“I think we deserved more than a point, to be honest. We kept possession well and should have taken more of our chances, but a point at Old Trafford is always good.

“It was crazy to walk out there with 80-odd-thousand people watching you – it felt a bit surreal, really,” continued Shaw.

“Prowsey (James Ward-Prowse) came on and made an impact with his crosses, and we had Calum on the bench as well. It’s great for us youngsters to be involved on days like that.

“Now we’ve got a game against Fulham at home to come on Saturday. We won’t look for anything less than three points, so hopefully we get them – it’s just about taking our chances, so we will do that.”
