Lambert says it’s difficult not to be aware of the importance placed on the result by the media and other outlets, but the club’s leading goal scorer insists that it will be easy to forget about the additional pressures placed on the game once the match begins.
He told Saints Player
: “We understand how important it is, but we’re going about it the way that we always go into our games, which is looking to get three points.
“Obviously we understand the importance of it because of the positions of the two teams, but we’ll be ready come Saturday.
“Cool heads will be needed as it will be a very high tempo game so we’ve got to be calm, but we will be up for the game and hopefully come Saturday we can perform the way we know that we can.
“The adrenaline comes anyway so you’ve just got to stay calm especially before the game, keep cool and then when the match starts you’ll play your normal game; then you’ll forget about all the media pressures and so on and you’ll just get on with the game, and that’s all I’m looking for.”
It has been a steep learning curve for the Saints squad both on and off the pitch, with Rickie citing the media analysis as an additional factor that the squad had previously not been used to.
“That’s the Premier League isn’t it?” he explained. “We’ve learned fast about the media coming into the Premier League, I know I have anyway and that’s been kind of a shock.
“Everything gets magnified one hundred per cent so we know that Saturday will be played out as a massive game.
“We know that it is a massive game anyway, although we know that the media will make it into the worst if it’s a loss and the best if it’s a win, but we’ve just got to stay calm, stay focused and play the opponent.”
Rickie has scored four times in the Barclays Premier League this term
Saints visit Loftus Road for the first time in four seasons this weekend and Lambert emphasised that the confidence is still very much with Nigel Adkins’ side, particularly on the back of an encouraging display against Swansea last Saturday.
“It’s a game we’re confident that we can win or get a result from,” Rickie enthused. “There’s going to be pressure on both teams and probably a little more pressure on them as it’s at their place instead of ours.
