Lovren praises team effort

Saints’ Anfield goalscoring hero Dejan Lovren insists the plaudits for the team’s 1-0 success on Merseyside should go to the whole squad.

Lovren struck the decisive goal in the win over the Barclays Premier League leaders with a towering header in the 53rd minute from an Adam Lallana corner, but the defender says the whole side should be praised for the way in which Saints went on to take all three points back to Southampton.

“I think the whole team made that today,” he told Saints Player after the game.

“It was amazing. I think we did a great job and it was important to get a clean sheet too,” he added of the team’s third shut-out in five games.

“I think with that clean sheet we have a lot of confidence in our team, and of course, we are happy about that.”

Although the resilience at the back has been noted, much of the pre-match focus was on scoring goals, and the centre-back was keen to prove that they had been unfortunate not to score more already this season.

“It’s a big moment if you score a goal, especially here at Anfield, but I repeat that’s not important as the three points that we take home, so congratulations should go to everybody.

“I think we’ve found it (goal threat) already before, but we didn’t have the luck to score against West Ham where I think we deserved a win, but now we really deserved this because we played very well and I think we can do the same thing next week.”

The victory was Saints’ second of the season, the other co-incidentally also coming on the road in the opening day win at West Bromwich Albion.

Lovren has started in all five games this season, and says he now has an idea of how English football compares to what he has been used to from before.

“Of course there’s a difference between the French league and the Premier League,” he assessed.

“I think I do some things well but I can do a lot better so I try to do that each time, and I hope now that we will win the next game.”
