The full back has endured a more testing season than most having been struck down by injury just three league games into a return to the team, which was a compounding blow to losing his starting berth to summer arrival Nathaniel Clyne.
But he’s pragmatic about Clyne’s arrival on the scene: “Nothing stands still in football,” he tells Wednesday’s official matchday programme.
“When a team gets promoted to the Premier League, the first thing the manager does is strengthen his squad.
“Now it’s up to me to play even better to get back into the side. It’s always been my ambition to play in the Premier League, and now we’ve arrived, I desperately want to be a part of it.”
Frazer hasn’t featured since making an early exit from the 2-2 draw with Fulham at St Mary’s at the start of October, due to a thigh injury he sustained against the Cottagers, but now he’s stepping up his comeback ahead of the busy Christmas schedule.
And he will be a welcome addition to the squad. Not just a rock solid defensive player, Richardson is also effective going forward. He had a dozen goalscoring assists last season just to prove the point.
“The last two seasons at Southampton have been the best of my career,” Richardson reflects on his time at Saints to-date.
“Last season particularly was just great. I played regularly and it was just a privilege being part of a side playing such good football.
“This one hasn’t started well for me or the team. We’ve had some difficult games and I just want to get out there and help.”
