No sooner than one campaign ends, another one begins for Saints’ groundstaff, as they work around the clock to reinstate the quality playing surface that we have become accustomed to seeing throughout the season.
This week, the top layer of grass was taken back to allow new seeds to grow over the brief summer respite, and although nature will then take its course with hopefully a blend of rainfall and sunlight. Fortunately, there is an element of control in the process, thanks to the lighting rigs which the club invested in last year.
The team’s success on the pitch last season was reflected by the dedication of the staff at St Mary’s, as Saints were named as one of five clubs highly commended for their work in the Groundsman of the Year awards in the Barclays Premier League.
Run by the Playing Surfaces Committee in conjunction with The Sports Turf Research Institute (STRI), the Groundsman of the Year awards recognise the importance of the quality of pitches for professional football, encourage all groundstaff to produce high quality pitches and acknowledge the head groundsmen and their staff who produce the best playing surfaces in each division.
So, with less than 90 days to go until the 2013-14 campaign begins, the turf work has already started to be a cut above next season!
