Mauricio Pochettino says Saints have been galvanised by the point they picked up against Manchester City last weekend.

Southampton were unlucky not to run out winners over their high-scoring opponents and were forced to settle for a draw at St Mary’s.

But, with the result ending a three-game losing streak, the players have been in good spirits this week – much to their manager’s satisfaction.

“I’m happy with the manner in which that point was achieved,” Pochettino told Saints Player ahead of Saturday’s trip to Newcastle.

“The team played very well and we were able to cut the run of negative results, which was very important for us.

“We showed that we are a real team and that we work for each other and help each other. Regardless of who is playing, the players all stand up to be counted.”

Saints now travel to the north-east to face a Newcastle side in good form, having won five of their last six games to climb up to seventh in the Premier League table.

An away victory at St James’ Park would see Southampton leapfrog their opponents – something Pochettino is targeting.

“It’s going to be a very important game,” admitted the manager.

“We’re away from home against a team that has been doing very well of late, so it’s going to be very tough – but our main focus is to get the three points.”
