Two early crosses from the right were dealt with by stand-in Glovers 'keeper Richard Martin who replaced the suspended Alex McCarthy in the Yeovil goal, but it was the visitors who got the first effort on target. Ryan Mason's cross from the left was headed goalwards by Sam Williams. His effort however, was at a comfortable height for Kelvin Davis to gather.

Andrew Welsh then warmed the hands of the Saints 'keeper with a drive in the 7th minute before Saints broke forward and won a free-kick in their opponents half.

Lambert got a good connection on the set-piece, but as the ball deflected through, Martin was able to collect it at the feet of Adam Lallana.

Lallana won himself a free-kick on the left hand side in the 13th minute. The midfielder brushed himself off to take the dead ball, and his cross was narrowly headed over by Dean Hammond from six yards out.

On 17 minutes Saints were awarded a penalty as Marek Saganowski was brought down in the box after being put through by Lambert. The number seven took the spot kick, and smashed it into the bottom left corner to put Alan Pardew's side into the lead.

With their tails now up, the hosts continued to press forward. Neal Trotman headed a corner just wide at the start of a prolonged spell in the Glovers' half. Debutant Radhi Jaidi was the next to go close with another header on 25 minutes.

Welsh went close for the visitors just shy of the half hour mark as he cut in from the right and shot low, but Davis got down well to deny the winger at his near post.

Williams headed over Mason's corner ten minutes before the break as Terry Skiverton's side sought a way back into the match, but Saints continued to soak up the pressure without too many problems.

The Glovers came to life towards the end of the half and provided a scare two minutes before the interval when Craig Alcock headed Mason's free-kick from the by-line narrowly wide.

Half Time: Saints 1-0 Yeovil Town

Yeovil picked up where they left off with some early adventure, Keiran Murtagh won a corner and Ryan Mason fired over on the turn inside the area.

On 50 Saints were awarded a second penalty, as Lloyd James' cross was adjudged to have been handled by Nathan Jones. Lambert stepped up again and made no mistake with a firm penalty, which beat Martin. The Reading loanee had guessed the right way once more, but could do nothing about the shot.

In the 57th minute Morgan Schneiderlin almost brought the crowd to its feet again as his strong cross evaded everyone in the area and almost crept in at the far post for what would have been a freak goal.

With the home support cheering every pass, Saints almost forced a third as Jaidi released Saganowski on the left hand side. The Pole arrowed a low cross into the box which James fired wide, earning a corner as it was deflected on its way through.

Dean Hammond picked up the first booking of the game on 65 minutes before Mason ended a mazy run with a tame shot for the visitors.

Williams tested Davis moments later with a stronger effort but Saints remained firm at the back.

St. Mary's welcomed new signing Papa Waigo N'diaye into the action as Alan Pardew made a double substitution. Schneiderlin made way for Joseph Mills and N'diaye took the place of Saganowski.

The pair didn't take long to make an impression as Mills supplied N'diaye with a short ball which the on loan striker took in his stride before firing a low shot into the arms of Martin.

Trotman and James picked up bookings in quick succession before JP Kalala blazed over from the left on 77.

Paul Wotton replaced Wayne Thomas with twelve minutes to play as James dropped into the right back position.

N'diaye won a free-kick on the right with ten minutes to play which Mills guided dangerously into the box narrowly escaping the heads of Trotman and the forward on loan from Fiorentina.

Five minutes later, N'diaye collected a Lloyd James pass on the right once more, and struck a fierce effort which had to be turned around the post by the goalkeeper. Lambert then tried to provide N'diaye with a chance in front of goal, but it was turned out by defender Steven Caulker.

Saints continued to push for a third right up until the final whistle, but they had already done more than enough as they saw the game out comfortably for the first league win of the campaign.
