Saints hit five goals for the second successive game to record their biggest win of the season in a romp over Huddersfield.

All of the strikes came from different players as the goals continued to flow at St. Mary's for the hosts, maintaining the unbeaten league run from the turn of the year.

Rickie Lambert opened the scoring with a firm header on 16 minutes which was followed up by a looping effort from strike partner Lee Barnard eight minutes later.

Jason Puncheon notched his second in as many games with an almost carbon copy effort from Saturday to make it 3-0 going into the break.

Skipper Dean Hammond planted home the third header of the game with fifteen minutes remaining from Puncheon's corner before substitute Papa Waigo N'Diaye wrapped up the avalanche of goals with a well taken fifth as he kept his cool to pass the ball home inside the six yard box.

An unchanged Saints starting line up from the weekend kicked off defending the Chapel End at St. Mary's on a milder night on the south coast.

The Terriers named former Southampton loanee Neal Trotman in their side and the youngster's new defensive teammates had to deal with an early foray from Alan Pardew's men which resulted in a corner. The set piece saw Adam Lallana pick out Dean Hammond, who narrowly headed wide with only two minutes on the clock.

The hosts appeared comfortable in possession during the opening exchanges with the high tempo nature of Saturday's encounter with Walsall not taking its toll.

Huddersfield's first venture forward saw top scorer Jordan Rhodes head inches wide from close range. Shortly afterwards José Fonte left the field for some treatment for a cut which saw him replace his shirt as he re-entered the action with a numberless red and white jersey.

In the 14th minute, Lallana saw his shot from distance held by Alex Smithies in the Town goal, but just two minutes later Saints broke the deadlock thanks to a goal from their leading marksman.

Jason Puncheon's cross from the right swirled across the area and Rickie Lambert firmly planted a header off the underside of the crossbar which bounced down into the net, in a not too dissimilar fashion to his effort in the reverse fixture at the start of the season.

Kelvin Davis was tested on 20 minutes as he produced a fine reflex save to deny Lee Novak's overhead kick from a corner that reached the far post, but was brilliantly kept out by the shot stopper.

It paid dividends four minutes later as Saints doubled their advantage, with another well taken header. Hammond's cross from the by-line on the right was met by Lee Barnard, who looped the ball over Smithies with a flick off his head.

Just shy of the half hour mark Dan Harding tried his luck with a curling shot and then not long after, the left back slipped the ball into the feet of Barnard whose turn and strike flew narrowly wide of the far post.

Saints were now in full flow and there seemed no way back for the Terriers on 33 when Barnard turned provider with a smart ball forward to release Puncheon. The winger cut inside before striking a shot reminiscent of his goal on Saturday into the far corner off the post to make it 3-0.

Inside the last ten minutes of the half, the hosts went close again from a long range free-kick taken by Lambert. The Liverpudlian struck a venomous effort from the best part of 30 yards which Smithies had to get a hand on to push out of play for a corner.

Town continued to try and play a slick passing game, but chances were few and far between for Lee Clark's side with Rhodes not getting enough purchase on a header from Anthony Pilkington's cross.

Back up the other end, Puncheon and Lallana had switched flanks and the latter wasn't far away from a fourth as he followed in from Lambert's drilled shot which Smithies spilt into his path inside the six yard box. Saints remained in control going into the break.

Half Time: Saints 3-0 Huddersfield

Lee Clark withdrew Dean Heffernan and replaced him with Krystian Pearce for the second 45 minutes as the visitors came back out a little earlier than the hosts.

Lallana won a corner off Trotman and the resulting set piece almost resulted in another goal as Puncheon delivered from the left and Hammond nodded the ball across at the far post which went into the net off a Town player's leg but referee Pat Miller halted play for an infringement.

The visitors made their second change on 56 was Liverpool loan forward Nathan Eccleston came on for Gary Roberts to try and boost the Terriers' forward line.

Puncheon went close with a fierce strike from distance on the right as he continued to roam in the final third with breathtaking awareness in full flight.

The wide man resumed corner taking duty just past the hour mark to provide the next Saints chance as Fonte collected the delivery and cut the ball back to Morgan Schneiderlin, but the Frenchman was denied by a low save from Smithies.

Another set piece from Puncheon found its way to Fonte via the head of Hammond, but the Portugese centre back had little time to control his close range header which went wide.

On 75 the series of corners was rewarded when Hammond got his name on the scoresheet by powering home a header from another delivery by the recent signing from Plymouth Argyle.

With twelve minutes remaining, Barnard got a fantastic reception as he was replaced by Papa Waigo before Radhi Jaidi followed suit for Dan Seaborne two minutes later.

Fonte and Schneiderlin both played crucial roles in keeping the visitors out at the other end as they both slid in for separate key blocks in the same attack.

Saints responded swiftly and scored a sweet fifth with six minutes on the clock through substitute Papa Waigo. Lambert set the Senegalese front man through with a high ball which he brought down with an audacious touch, before keeping his cool to round the 'keeper and turn the ball home.

16 year-old Academy scholar, Oxlade-Chamberlain was the brought on to replace Lambert with four minutes to go. The youngster, who had been handed the number 41 shirt prior to kick off, nearly got in on the act as Lallana put him through inside the area, but the Under-18s regular couldn't find the target.

Saints finished the game with a terrific passing move which would deserved to culminate in a goal but Puncheon and Lallana hesitated before the latter clipped the ball over the bar, as the hosts settled for five again.
