Saints and Wycombe played out a stalemate at Adams Park.

A dour encounter with weather conditions to match never quite came to life, as Saints maintained their unbeaten league run in 2010.

A closely matched first half saw few chances created from either side as defences came out on top. It was a similar story in the second period, but Adam Lallana went close to registering a goal for the visitors as he dragged a low effort wide.

Striker Jon-Paul Pittman was the Wanderers' biggest threat, but he was denied by a terrific one handed save from Kelvin Davis prior to Lallana's shot as neither side could break the deadlock.

Wycombe: Heaton, Woodman, Bennett, Westwood, Kelly, Keates, Mousinho, McLeod, Betsy, Revell, Pittman. Subs (not used): Shearer, Oliver, Bloomfield, Montrose, Phillips, Beavon, Hinshelwood.

Alan Pardew made one change to his starting line up from the win at Norwich with Morgan Schneiderlin ruled out through a knee injury, whilst defender Dan Seaborne, who was on the bench at Carrow Road, also dropped out as a precaution.

Saints kicked off defending the end housing the travelling support out in force on a cool night at Adams Park.

The hosts provided an early scare when Jon-Paul Pittman took advantage of a slip at the back and forced a shot at goal from ten yards out which Kelvin Davis gathered at the second attempt.

Alex Revell blazed wide soon after as Gary Waddock's side tried to make their early endeavour pay on a sticky surface.

The visitors soaked up the initial pressure before launching their own attacks. Michail Antonio's cross was taken off the head of Rickie Lambert and in the following move a melee ensued on 18 minutes inside the area, before Jason Puncheon struck a low shot into the arms of Wanderers 'keeper Tom Heaton.

Kevin Betsy was denied at the other end by a smart close range save from Davis as Wycombe continued to press for a way through.

Antonio was replaced by Paul Wotton in the 34th minute to match the hosts in midfield with Jason Puncheon moving out to the right hand side.

Wanderers had a good chance two minutes later when Dean Keates got in behind the Saints backline and nearly caught Davis out with a shot from the edge of the box which the 'keeper fumbled before gathering short of the goal line.

Dan Harding went into the book 38 for a firm challenge, before Puncheon flashed a shot wide from Lallana's pass from twelve yards out.

Two corners in a minute of stoppage time at the end of the half were both dealt with comfortably by Davis as a conclusion to a drab first period arrived.

The second 45 began in the same fashion with a goal needed to spark the game into life although Saints continued to look assured at the back.

A slight knock to Lallana saw the youngster require some early attention form the physio, but the midfielder was OK to carry on.

Keates found the side netting with a firm low strike on 51 as chances remained few and far between in the game.

Puncheon picked out Lambert on 62 with a beautifully weighted pass that the Liverpudlian cushioned down into the path of Lallana who snatched at a shot which flew over the bar into the Saints fans behind the goal.

Saints' new number four provided a second chance moments later, as his low cross found Lambert which Heaton just held on to under pressure from a plethora of visiting players rushing in.

John Mousinho went into Darren Deadman's notebook and on 69 minutes the hosts almost took the lead. Jon-Paul Pittman's sweetly struck volley tested Davis at full stretch as the 'keeper produced a first class diving save to push the ball out of play for a corner.

On 73 Alan Pardew withdrew Lee Barnard for Papa Waigo and the substitute's first involvement saw him find Lambert on the edge of the box. The Club's top scorer laid the ball into the path of Lallana, but the England Under-21 couldn't quite force the ball on the target as his firm shot just went wide.

Lallana had a cut to his head seen to before returning to the fray with both sides' resilience showing through.

Pittman's mazy run and shot came to nothing before Papa Waigo followed suit as time started to slip away and the rain started to fall at its heaviest all evening.

Waigo was fouled on 84 some 30 yards from goal which set Lambert up for a long range special. The front man duly struck a firm shot towards goal which loanee goalkeeper Heaton did well to keep hold of.

Three minutes of stoppage time were added on where Wayne Thomas replaced Lallana in an advanced position to try and steal a win, but the goal never came.
