Two goals in injury time were shared as Saints were held at the Den.

Late drama in south London provided a sting in the tail to an encounter which for long periods looked as though a breakthrough wouldn't arrive.

Saints thought they had won it as Rickie Lambert lined up a free-kick from 30 yards out in stoppage time which had goal written all over it even before it nicked off the wall and wrong footed David Forde in the Millwall goal.

However, with added on time quickly evaporating, a counter-attack was smartly finished into the bottom corner of Kelvin Davis' goal by on loan midfielder Liam Trotter who brought Saints back down to earth with a cruel late strike.

Millwall: Forde, Dunne, Robinson, Ward, Barron, Hackett, Abdou, Trotter, Schofield, Grabban (Harris 68), Morison. Subs (not used): Sullivan, Martin, Craig, Smith, Fuseini, Price.

All three of Saints' new signings made their debuts for the Club, as Jose Fonte, Jon Otsemobor and Daniel Seaborne lined up at the back alongside Dan Harding.

There was also a re-call to the team for winger Lee Holmes who made his first start of the season whilst Lloyd James also moved into midfield.

A prolonged downfall earlier in the afternoon in south London made for a few unpredictable moments on a pitch which had held firm in places despite the heavy spell of rain.

The first move of the match came on the left, as Holmes and Adam Lallana linked up with the latter's low cross towards the path of Lambert intercepted by Lions' 'keeper, Forde.

A swift attack from Saints in the tenth minute was rather abruptly ended by the hosts' captain Paul Robinson as Lallana was hauled down just outside of the area on the left hand side after collecting an exquisite throughball from Hammond. Lambert struck the resulting free-kick narrowly wide of the far post as Lloyd James dived towards the firmly hit ball across the box.

The best of Millwall's early endeavour saw winger Chris Hackett advance on the right and winning himself a corner which came to nothing amongst a penalty area packed with plenty of height and muscle from both sides.

It preceded a dis-jointed spell in the match as Saints continued to be patient in attack. Lallana's header from Holmes' cut back the closest to breaking the deadlock in the opening half an hour or so.

A terrific double save from Kelvin Davis, to deny Alan Dunne's long distance strike which came through a wall of bodies and then Lewis Grabban's follow up sparked the game back into life, before Alan Pardew was forced to shuffle his pack as Hammond went off injured and was replaced by Paul Wotton on 36 minutes.

The action became more free flowing before the end of the half, even though players were finding it difficult to stay on their feet on the awkward surface. Striker Steve Morison threatened with a header which flew wide inside the two minutes of additional time.

Half Time: Millwall 0-0 Saints

Saints restarted play in the second half, and less than three minutes in, Millwall ought to have taken the lead when Grabban was put through one on one with Davis, but the striker dragged his shot wide of the far post much to Alan Pardew's side's relief.

Lloyd James fired over from distance before Morison followed suit at the other end as the atmosphere inside the Den went up a notch with the Saints fans who had filled the top tier of the stand behind Forde's goal making themselves heard.

Forde's opposite number, Kelvin Davis was called into action either side of the hour mark as he firstly held Jimmy Abdou's deflected shot before getting a touch at full stretch to push Danny Schofield's curling shot past the post.

Lions manager Kenny Jackett made a change to his forward line as Neil Harris was introduced for Lewis Grabban with just over twenty minutes to play. Moments later, Hackett blazed Schofield's cross into the stands.

Dan Seaborne was cautioned for a foul on Morison down by the touchline with the new look Saints backline looking solid on its first outing, with Fonte following his new teammate into Mr. Woolmer's notebook soon after.

Pardew made his second switch of the game as Michail Antonio replaced Lloyd James with fifteen minutes remaining.
The winger's first touch of the game took him towards the byline on the right hand side where he was able to pick out Lallana, who from close range saw his flick blocked and Holmes was unable to get a clean touch on the follow up.

Antonio then made a pulsating run through the middle of the park and unleashed a fierce strike just past the right post as urgency from both sides filtered through late on.

With time running out Papa Waigo replaced Lallana as Saints pushed for a winner which looked as though it had arrived in added time.

The distance of 30 yards plus didn't put Lambert off as usual as the front man struck a vicious shot which was aided by a deflection as it wrong footed Forde to give Saints what looked like a hard earned three points.

Kenny Jackett's side however, went up the other end and from the following attack spoilt the party as midfielder Liam Trotter slotted the ball past Davis into the far corner with added on time effectively over.
