Saints dare to dream after coming back to secure a dramatic win over Norwich City on penalties in the Trophy.

Papa Waigo's last minute goal in normal time, his second of the night, took the Area Semi Final tie to a shoot out where sixteen spot kicks were needed to decide a winner.

Bartosz Bialkowski made three saves and Wayne Thomas converted the winning effort from 12 yards to record a 6-5 success in front of the Northam End, but that only told half of the story.

The hosts took the lead in the game on 13 minutes with Papa Waigo latching on to a fine pass from Lloyd James to give Alan Pardew's side the advantage, but goals in either half from Paul Lambert's side turned the game on its head, until Waigo's second intervention deep into stoppage time to set up a two legged Area Final with MK Dons.

Alan Pardew brought Papa Waigo, Neal Trotman and Jacob Mellis into the starting line up as Radhi Jaidi, Michail Antonio and David Connolly, made way from Saturday's side.

Saints' third successive home tie in the competition saw the Canaries get things underway at St. Mary's attacking the Chapel End. All four stands were open on a bitterly cold evening on the south coast.

Southampton made an early foray into City's area as skipper Dean Hammond started a move in the second minute. The midfielder played the ball out to Papa Waigo on the right hand side and the Senegalese forward cleverly set Jacob Mellis through on goal, but the Chelsea youngster saw his low shot pushed behind for a corner.

Waigo hit a telling ball across the area in the next attack which Lambert was unable to force on target as it came to him at an awkward height.

Saints broke the deadlock in the thirteenth minute which owed much to a delightful pass with the outside of his boot from Lloyd James. The Welshman played an inch perfect pass to release Papa Waigo, who shrugged off the advances of a defender before keeping his cool to force a shot home which took an eternity to cross the line, as Fraser Forster tried to keep the ball out.

The Fiorentina loanee did his trademark dancing celebration in front of the Northam as his early endeavour in the match was rewarded with a goal, the first one Norwich had conceded in the Trophy.

Scintillating football from Alan Pardew's side in the 27th minute almost led to what would have been a fine team goal as Lallana, Hammond and Mellis combined with an array of neat touches before the latter struck a firm shot down at Forster.

Tom Adeyemi went just as close at the other end immediately afterwards as he curled a shot wide of Bialkowski's right post.

The Polish shot stopper was called into action moments later to deny striker Chris Martin from just inside the area.

On 32 minutes the brief pressure from the visitors told as Norwich hit back with a goal from Gary Doherty. The Irishman collected a partially cleared free-kick inside the area, and crashed a shot in off the underside of the crossbar to regain parity.

Saints maintained their good use of the ball in midfield as they waited patiently to try and crack the Canaries once more, but the East Anglian side held firm until the interval, nearly capitalising on a couple of late opportunities.

Half Time: Saints 1-1 Norwich City

Morgan Schneiderlin made way for Paul Wotton at the start of the new half as Saints re-started the action.

A cup tie feel to the game became more prominent but clear chances remained at a premium until Wotton tried his luck from distance which Forster held well.

On the break, City went in front through a scrappy looking goal. Chris Martin took full advantage of a loose ball as Holt and Bialkowski went for a through ball which spilled out kindly for the Canaries forward.

Michail Antonio replaced Mellis on the hour mark as Alan Pardew's side pressed for a way back into the match.

Centre back Michael Nelson headed a corner over the bar for the visitors who made a double switch shortly afterwards as Matthew Gill and Jon Otsemobor entered the game.

The 15,000 strong Saints crowed did their best to re-ignite the hosts' confidence going forward and they made their voices heard even further, when Nelson saw yellow for a cynical challenge on Antonio as he burst through the middle.

Goal scorer in the last round Wayne Thomas was introduced for Chris Perry inside the last quarter of an hour, as Saints went to a 3-5-2 formation to try and force an equaliser.

Holt blazed over at one end before Rickie Lambert followed suit at the other as play entered the last ten minutes at St. Mary's.

Russell Martin was booked for a foul on James as three minutes of stoppage time were added on during which time the visitors frustrated the crowd by running the clock, but with virtually the last kick of the game Papa Waigo came up trumps again.

In dramatic fashion the forward poached an effort from close range as a high ball into the box fell to him, taking the match to penalty kicks.
