Saints picked up their first piece of silverware for over 30 years with an emphatic win over Carlisle at Wembley stadium.
A powerful and clinical display from Alan Pardew's side was just reward for the phenomenal turn out from the 44,000 or so supporters that made the journey to the home of football, and the many more at home.
A penalty from Rickie Lambert set Saints on their way inside the opening quarter of an hour, and from there on they rarely looked back. A perfectly timed second from Adam Lallana late on in the first half made it comfortable going into the break.
Five minutes into the new half, Papa Waigo N'diaye crashed home a header from a rebound as Saints threatened to run riot, and just over ten minutes later, they were out of sight when Michail Antonio pitched in with a sweetly taken fourth.
A late response from the head of substitute Gary Madine took some of the gloss off the scoreline, but not off the finish, as Saints won the Johnstone's Paint Trophy!

Saints were greeted on to the pitch by scenes to remember for a lifetime as over 44,000 supporters packed the North, East and West stands at Wembley as over half the stadium was draped in red and white as the Club made its first visit to the new home of football.
Midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin missed out through injury, so Paul Wotton replaced the Frenchman in midfield. Michail Antonio returned to the starting line up after injury on his return from injury whilst Dan Harding kept his place at right back.
Carlisle got things underway with Saints defending the end where the majority of the travelling support was, as both sides had an initial feel for the vast Wembley playing surface stretching both flanks.
An early warning came in the fifth minute of play when an in-swinging free-kick from Ian Harte on the right hand side tested Kelvin Davis, who quickly gathered the ball at the second attempt with Graham Kavanagh lurking dangerously.
Saints looked a threat through Antonio's determination in attack, and on 13 minutes the Reading loanee linked up with Papa Waigo on the right and then delivered a curling cross was handled inside the area by Peter Murphy.
The United centre back was booked for the infringement which was made worse for the Cumbrians when Lambert stepped up to smash the ball into the top right corner from the spot to give Saints an early lead with his 32nd strike of the campaign.
United almost hit back immediately when Matt Robson's run and cross from the left was fortunately met by Davis before Scott Dobie, as Alan Pardew's side began to settle the match at their tempo.
On 22 Saints were denied a second when Antonio's long throw-in from the right was flicked on by Waigo into the path of Lallana, who swiveled and volleyed a shot which 'keeper Adam Collin kept out from point blank range.
Moments later Lallana was foiled again from another Waigo flick on, as this time, the attacker's volley was held by the United custodian.
As the atmosphere continued to grow inside the stadium, Saints went close again as Waigo's pass was knocked on by Lambert to Antonio's whose shot was pushed away by Collin.
Carlisle responded with a series of efforts just after the half hour mark. The first came from Robson's cross on the left which found Richard Keogh, and the full-back pulled it across for Kavanagh, but the veteran shot was blocked by Fonte who threw himself at the ball.
United went even closer moments later when Ian Harte headed Robson's cross from the left on to the top of the crossbar, and then Marc Bridge-Wilkinson lofted his long range shot on to the top of the net.
Two minutes before the break Saints doubled their advantage as Antonio wreaked havoc inside the area once again with long throw. His missile launcher was headed on by Lambert across the six yard box and Lallana was on hand to nod home from close range.
The last action of the half saw Lambert's free-kick narrowly missed by Radhi Jaidi as the Tunisian centre-back rose to try and divert the cross goalwards, but the ball swept wide of the target as Saints took a two goal lead into the break.
Half Time: Saints 2-0 Carlisle
The party atmosphere was re-ignited four minutes after the interval when Saints added a third with a move started and finished by Papa Waigo. The Fiorentina loanee released Lambert on the right and the striker took the ball down the right and put in a low cross which defender Evan Horwood won't want to see again as he scuffed his clearance into the air. Antonio's shot effort was brilliantly kept out by Collin, but fell invitingly for Waigo, who crashed home a close range header in front of the south coast contingent.
At the other end, Adam Clayton skewed his shot wide on the left as Carlisle became more frustrated in their attempts to get back into the game.
Just shy of the hour mark Saints got their fourth with another name added to the goal scorers list as a birthday boy got a dream present. A high ball was won by Lambert and using his strength and accuracy, Antonio latched on to the loose ball and slammed home a well taken goal to make it 4-0.
United boss Greg Abbott replaced Bridge-Wilkinson with Joe Anyinsah but the substitute's first touch was one to forget as he screwed a shot wide from inside the box.
Scores of red and white flags and scarves came to the fore from the Saints end interspersed with Mexican waves as Alan Pardew's men remained unrelenting in possession.
Shortly after Kavanagh had been replaced by Gary Madine, Saints made their first change of the match as Papa Waigo went off to a standing ovation with Simon Gillett taking his place for the last fifteen minutes or so.
Davis was alert to deal with Harte's free-kick as substitute Madine closed in, but on 84, United went one better when sub Madine glanced home the Irishman's ball in from the left to reduce the deficit.
David Connolly came on for Paul Wotton as Saints reverted back to 4-4-2 as three minutes of stoppage time were added on, and then Gillett drew a smart save from Collin as the crowd excitedly counted down to a celebration of red and white.
