Saints boss Mark Wotte has been encouraged by his squad's determination to fight for promotion next season, although several key players' futures remain undecided.
The Dutchman held talks with all of his senior pros in the wake of the Sunday's final day defeat at the City Ground, but has been left with some tough decisions to make despite receiving an overwhelmingly positive response.
"The players all said that they felt they had a really good connection with the support staff and the other players, and that if we all stick together we can have a better future for Southampton Football Club," he said.
"We have told Bradley Wright-Phillips and Jason Euell that we cannot extend their contracts because of the situation that were in, but if that changes then we will consider offering them a deal but on totally different wages than they are on now.
"They were both happy to wait for us to consider things. They didn't say 'No, no, no I want to leave', so that was encouraging, but that they were happy to wait for our decision about what's going to happen.
"We will keep an open line with them, but it will be a completely different contract and they agreed that that was fair enough. In the meantime though they are out of contract and so are able to sign for other clubs.
"Goalkeeper Kelvin Davis said that he wanted to wait until the last possible day before moving on elsewhere if he receives another offer and expressed again that he wanted to stay.
"I also told him again that he is very important to us and that he will be the first person to be offered a new contract as soon as there is someone in a position to do so and we have secured a better future for our club.
"Tommy Forecast and Bartosz Bialkowski have also expressed an interest in getting first team experience, so if Kelvin stays they have asked to go on loan to do that. They are obviously waiting on the decision on Kelvin though but they both want to fight for the first team shirt."
