Wotte out to spoil Forest's party

Posted on: Wed 06 May 2009

Saints boss Mark Wotte will be in no mood to celebrate this Sunday as his side set out to spoil Forest's party…

With both sides' fate already sealed ahead of the final day clash, Saints will be playing the role of the 'party pooper' at the City Ground as they aim to bow out of the Championship in style.

"We're not there for Nottingham Forest and I don't want to be part of a celebration for someone else's club," said the Dutchman. "We just want to celebrate a win of our own to thank our fans for their fantastic support.

"I feel sorry for what happened last weekend, because we were not able to thank the supporters at St. Mary's who turned up in large numbers," he added. "It was sad that we couldn't do that, so we will put that right before the game at Nottingham Forest."

Saints will be well supported on the day with many fans travelling up to catch one last glimpse of their side in the Championship…for this year at least!

"There will be about 2000 fans travelling and we respect them a lot, so we will be taking the game seriously for them," Wotte continued. "We have done our best this week to try and lift the players' spirits, although the game on Sunday will be totally different to the one we were expecting because one team is safe and one isn't.

"The mood is much different now compared to how it was just after the last game, but it all started last Thursday when the ten points were taken off. That was the biggest blow of the season, but I thought we played an excellent game against Burnley, even though we didn't finish it with a victory. We should have won, but that's been the story of the season.

"The next day we were all devastated and very down because we were relegated but over the past few days we have been building the team back up for the game against Nottingham Forest because we are taking it seriously and we all want to have a respectable end to the season.

"There's no pressure any more so hopefully the fans will be able to enjoy a good Southampton team performance and see us pick up a victory."

LATEST TEAM NEWS

Saints will be without Paul Wotton who is still recovering from a clash with Burnley defender Clarke Carlisle, which left him with facial injuries.

Winger Lee Holmes is also ruled out with a twisted ankle, whilst Marek Saganowski (knee) and Rudi Skacel (Achilles) are also sidelined with minor complaints.

"I don't think I'm going to change an awful lot from the team that performed so well against Burnley," Wotte said, "although Olly Lancashire is fully fit after a groin strain and is back in the squad along with Oscar Gobern, so it's good to have them back."
