Saints' French midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin missed out on a medal at the Mediterranean Games as his national side lost to Libya in the semi-finals of the competition.
Schneiderlin, who has captained the Under 20's side in Pescara throughout the Games, was not involved in the sixteen for the match at the Angelini Stadium, leaving him to watch on as his teammates were taken to a penalty shoot-out for the right to earn a bronze medal.
Stand-in captain Lamine Kone, a 20 year-old defender who plays for French outfit Châteauroux, scored one of France's seven successful attempts but Lyon's Loic Abenzoar missed the decisive spot-kick as Libya claimed an 8-7 victory.
The defeat meant that the French were unable to add to their nation's tally of 139 medals in the Games which currently leaves them in second place overall behind hosts Italy.
Schneiderlin is the only player from the French side who plays his domestic football in England, and he will shortly head back to Southampton to link up with his teammates on the south coast again with pre-season now underway.
