St. Mary's Salutes New Duo

Posted on: Sun 19 Jul 2009

It was a day when new arrivals and appointments were top of the agenda and football itself made a welcome return to St. Mary's…

After the uncertainty of the last few months, when such an occasion was in clear danger of simply never taking place, it was finally time for Southampton fans to celebrate at the start of an exciting new chapter in the club's long, proud history.

The arrival of new owner Markus Liebherr has not only rescued the club from the brink of the unthinkable, it has also instilled a new sense of optimism and belief that was clear to see amongst the crowds that turned up en masse to mark this momentous day.

Before kick-off, the buzz was back on the concourses that have laid empty since the 2-2 draw against Burnley back in April, and Saints were back in business with a whole lot to look forward to in the months and years ahead.

With the fans in their seats eagerly awaiting the big kick-off, St. Mary's was introduced to the man who we all have to thank for making this occasion possible.

And as he strolled down the steps to take his seat in the front row of the Director's box, the name of Markus Liebherr poignantly rang out around the ground as he waved to acknowledge the fans.

With his family at his side, Mr Liebherr was certainly made to feel at home as he took in his first glimpses of the passion and pride that has seen Southampton fans build-up such a fantastic reputation throughout the game.

There was also the chance to meet the man who Liebherr's team have tasked with returning Southampton to its rightful place in the league, and new manager Alan Pardew received an equally rapturous welcome as he gave a thumbs up to the on looking crowd.

A colourful finale to proceedings then saw local school children usher in the new era with flags and balloons, including a giant Swiss flag in honour of Markus Liebherr.
