Pardew's verdict - Hearts

Posted on: Sat 25 Jul 2009

Saints boss Alan Pardew was delighted with a win from his first game in charge at St. Mary's.

The former West Ham manager couldn't have asked for much more from his side which was impressive in all departments.

"We're overjoyed with that performance," Pardew said. "We've still got a lot to do but in terms of what we wanted to achieve here today, we've ticked a lot of boxes.

"I've learnt what I already knew, we have a disciplined group of lads who are good players and they just need a platform to give good performances."

Midfielder Adam Lallana opened the scoring inside the first quarter of an hour with a strong finish and Pardew insisted that the England Under-21 star is very much part of his plans.

"Adam got the first goal and gave a really, really strong performance," he said.

"And there's no doubt in my mind that he is staying at the club, none at all, I'm not letting him go anywhere.

"He's a young player and too many good young players have gone from here last year through financial pressure, not at the manager's will or even the Chairman's will, just financial pressure. That's not there anymore and good young players like Adam are definitely staying."

Pardew also praised the performance of Stern John who battled hard for just over an hour before he was substituted.

"I thought that Stern was excellent today, he was like a boxer, in that he weakened them and then Grzegorz came in and got the glory. Sometimes that happens, but he gave a good performance.

"I also thought that the back four were really solid today, they did their job well and dealt with everything well.

"We created some nice moves, there was some good inter play and good deliveries on crosses which I thought were excellent today and we always will because you need crosses going into the box."

Two goal hero Rasiak also impressed the 48 year-old boss but Pardew conceded that he may have to fight to hold on to the Polish international forward.

"We'll have to wait and see with Grzegorz's situation, there are clubs that are interested in him and he's done himself no harm today. I'd like to keep him but if it's a situation where a club make a bid that's acceptable then he will go."

Pardew was happy to send the fans home with a victory and hopes they will join him in looking forward to the challenge next season.

"It was just good to put in a decent performance in front of the Southampton fans today. They can go home and be pleased with that and hopefully look forward to having a good season here."
