Lambert: Relief To Win

Posted on: Mon 21 Sep 2009

Penalty king Rickie Lambert was pleased that the wait for a win is over and hopes a victory over Yeovil will kick start Saints' season.

The number seven was the beneficiary of two spot kicks awarded to Alan Pardew's side, and after dispatching them both, he admitted that it was a relief more than anything to get three points.

"We've been waiting for the first win together and it's a big relief so let's just push on now," the striker said.

"Results are everything and we were getting frustrated, but we knew that the way we were playing that we weren't far off, and that the first win was just around the corner.

"Had we not been playing well then we might have been a bit worried but we knew that we were never far away."

Lambert scored his first penalty on 17 minutes after Marek Saganowski had been brought down inside the area, whilst his second came shortly after half time after a handball from a Glovers defender.

"The 'keeper got hand to the first one but it was a bit too hard," he explained. "For the second one, I wasn't sure what the linesman had seen, but if it was lucky then I think we deserved that for the penalties that we should have had this season.

"I struck it right in the corner so I was made up to see it go in. I was just thinking about where I was going to put it, but I'd made my mind up fairly early that I was going to go to the opposite corner.

"The 'keeper's gone the right way, but fortunately it's gone right into the corner otherwise I think he would have got a hand to it."

The two strikes maintained the former Bristol Rovers' forward's three game consecutive record of scoring against Yeovil, something he was only made aware of by opposition manager Terry Skiverton just before the game.

"I didn't know I had a good record against them until their manager said to me, 'Lambo stop scoring against us!' I gave a little laugh, but I hadn't realised I had such a record."

The first league win of the campaign meant that the team were in high spirits after the game and Lambert hopes that it goes a long way towards eradicating the negative points tally soon.

"When we get to zero or one point I think that will be a massive mental boost for us so we're just trying to get out of the minus as fast as we can.

"The lads are buzzing and are made up today obviously. You could see big relief on the faces it's been a long time coming so we've got to enjoy it."
