Lean Mean Goal Scoring Machine

Posted on: Mon 05 Oct 2009

Rickie Lambert revealed the secret to scoring his seventh goal in Saints colours after his latest spectacular effort in the win over Gillingham.

The striker says that he has never felt fitter thanks to the regime he has been given to improve his all round game.

"I've been doing extra fitness work and extra training and I really felt the benefits of it during the match," he explained. "This is the best I've felt physically after a game.

"To play in this league and in this team with the formation that we've been playing I needed to get fitter and that's what I've done.

"I'll keep on doing the fitness work and maybe I'll do even better."

A second goal in as many games for the Liverpudlian forward was the end result of a team which continues to build, whilst the fine finish executed by the striker was modestly appreciated by the man himself.

"I enjoyed it out there today and it was good to score the first one too," Lambert said. "I wouldn't say it was up there but it was a good goal.

"It's all about confidence. The team is getting used to one another now, obviously half of us are new so we're mixing it together and we're starting to learn each other's games and hopefully that will carry on improving.

"I'll be sleeping a lot better tonight now anyway, it was a brilliant performance."

The win pushed Saints into a positive points tally for the season and the top scorer at the club is already looking to the next target.

"It hadn't been mentioned in the camp too much but it was always in the back of everyone's minds. It's obviously a big boost to get on plus points now and we can start to look at the teams above us. Let's catch them and move out of the relegation zone.

"We need to push on now and take it into Tuesday and then next Friday we need to get a win to move forward."
