Wotton: We're In It To Win It
Paul Wotton is aiming to get past the second round of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy for the first time in his career.
The former Plymouth captain will be hoping to line up against his former side's near neighbours in Torquay United on Tuesday evening, and is looking forward to the prospect of a prolonged spell in the competition this time around.
"I remember the competition was under a different name every season I played in it but we didn't have any joy in it that's for sure," he highlighted. "It's a good chance for a cup run though, and at the end of the day the final is played at Wembley so what a great day out that would be.
"We're under no illusions as to how difficult that's going to be, but we're in the competition so we want to win it.
"We might be favourites on the night but that means nothing especially in cup games, so we won't be taking anything for granted at all. We beat Gillingham 4-1 on Saturday which was great but that's irrelevant on Tuesday night because our opponents are Torquay and that's who we've got to beat.
"I've seen them play a few times and they try and play football the right way so it will be a decent game," Wotton added. "We're looking forward to it and I'm sure they'll fancy their chances, but we fancy ours, and at the end of the day it's a game of football so I'm sure it will be hard working.
"Torquay is just up the road from where I'm from, down in Plymouth, and they've not a had a great start on their return to the football league but I know Paul Buckle a little bit, they place some decent stuff and will be hard-working and organised.
"Some of their players will enjoy playing at St. Mary's, although I know a few of their players have already played at places like this before, but it's a great stadium to go to so I'm sure they're looking forward to the tie."
Wotton was part of an Argyle side that lost to the Gulls at the same stage of the competition nine years ago, and admits he is unsure as to what sort of reception he will receive from the traveling support.
"It's not quite as fierce a rivalry as Plymouth vs Exeter although I'll probably get a few boos, but as long as they're not from the home punters I won't be too bothered!
"We've all played enough cup games to know the cliché that it is one game at a time, what else can you say? Torquay are our opponents and we have to beat them if we want to win the competition and that's what we're going to aim to do.
"It perhaps won't be a sell out crowd but the more fans we can have behind us the better and it's a great opportunity to come and see the team play at a reduced rate.
"We've had unbelievable support so far," he expressed. "I said that last season when we didn't have that much to shout about to be honest and the fans have been there through thick and thin every week. It's really appreciated by everyone in the changing room, they really back their team and they love the football club so you can see why this is such a terrific club.
"Sometimes when you think the world is against you everybody unites and groups together which is a great thing, we're trying to put that into the dressing room as well and I think we're getting there.
"Any professional footballer will tell you that they just want to play games, so the more games the better. This week we have the game on Tuesday night which is a good one to look forward to and so is Friday's trip to Southend."
