Lloyd's Belief

Posted on: Fri 09 Oct 2009

Lloyd James says that the belief is in the squad to maintain Saints' recent run of good form going into Friday's game at Southend.

The Welshman has ably deputised at right back once again in recent matches, but remains happy to play wherever he is needed in a side which continues to grow in confidence.

"We've had a good spirit since the start of the season and we've always had the belief that we can climb up the table," he said. "I think that our performances have shown that, but we drew a couple of games that we should have won.

"We are now starting to show that we are going to win games, and we proved that by beating Gillingham 4-1.

"It's the first back to back wins that we have got this season, but I wouldn't say the momentum is just starting because we've already gone six games unbeaten, obviously there were some draws, but that was still some momentum that we were picking up then in games.

"Obviously every game is important to keep progressing and if we keep winning then we will see where that takes us."

James added that the resilience shown in the performance against Torquay in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy on Tuesday should stand Saints in good stead going into Friday evening's match.

"I think that maybe we should have been 3-2 up in the first half of that game as we had enough chances. Obviously it didn't go that way, but I think that we showed good character to bounce back from that, and get back into the game.

"The manager actually said that he didn't mind us going two goals down, as it would see whether or not we have character in the team. I think we actually showed that we do have that, and we had that willingness to come back into the game with a never say die spirit."

Saints may need some of that resolve as they prepare for a tricky away trip at Roots Hall, but James is anticipating a decent encounter with the Shrimpers.

"It should be a great atmosphere, obviously the ground is nice and tight, and everytime you play at tight grounds like that, the atmosphere is good so it should make for a good game.

"I'm not really too sure what to expect from them as I've not had the chance to watch them play yet. Obviously every game in this league is going to be tough one, so we will go into it in the same way that we go into every game and make sure that we prepare right in order to get the right result.

"We have to keep our feet on the ground, but with two wins already this week, hopefully if we can get a third we can just keep going up and up.

"When we were two nil down the other night, we were all on a bit of a downer, but we showed good character to come back into the game, and now it is two wins in a week, so we are hoping we can make it a third on Friday."
