Pardew - 'Something's Got To Give'

Posted on: Fri 16 Oct 2009

Alan Pardew has warned his in form side that they are going to face a tough test at Oldham on Saturday.

The Saints boss is preparing for another long journey north in League One this weekend, but is anticipating a competitive fixture at Boundary Park.

"This game will be tricky and something's got to give," he explained. "We're going into a game when we've found our form but are playing one that are bang in form themselves.

"Oldham are a big club and they want to get back into the big time just like we do and we must never lose focus of that. There are a lot of teams in this division in that position.

"One good week doesn't suggest that we've turned our season around. You need a really strong month and then take that into the next one. We won't change what we do and we will hopefully impose ourselves on Oldham.

"It will be interesting to see what the set up of the game is like. They restricted Charlton last week and I'm not sure if they'll do that against us, especially being at home, so if they are going to match us then the fans will see that straightaway and how we play will tell its own story."

The manager travelled to watch the reserves play at Plymouth during the week where he kept a close eye on recent addition David Connolly, who has bolstered his striking options.

"It was an enlightening trip as we had some good performances," he highlighted. "David is looking somewhere near to his best and if we can get him to play at that level then we're going to be very fortunate.

"It's an exciting prospect because he's the perfect foil for Rickie Lambert and you'd like to think that with those two fit and well we could be a little too much for most teams in this division. As yet, David's not quite there so it's still in the melting pot.

"The boys who are playing in the team at the moment have been doing a brilliant job and the system that we've been playing has suited individuals. If they keep winning, then Connolly will have to sit on the bench anyway."

Three wins in a week have set his side in good spirits and Pardew is in an equally optimistic frame of mind ahead of Saturday's match.

"Monday and Tuesday this week reflected the good work we did last week. There was a little bit more confidence in them and they were more comfortable than they were when the pressure of the minus ten points was there.

"We should have won games that we didn't, but we've gone to Southend and we've done a great job on the back of a good week, so we look to extend that. I think we're one defeat in eight now or something like that, and we want to take that into Oldham.

"We've been fortunate with injuries too, so long may that continue. We didn't have too many knocks and we have trained really hard this week. The reserves came through as well so we're in good shape for Saturday.

"Oldham are unbeaten and look a strong team who are organised, so it will be a tough agenda for us to win there, but that's what we're aiming to do."
