Dean Hammond revealed that he owed his first goal for the club to the hard work Saints have put it on the training ground.
The midfielder's 11th minute header opened the scoring at Boundary Park and Hammond admitted that he was delighted that his endeavour paid dividends.
"We've been working hard in training because set pieces are very important and it worked today," he smiled.
"If you want to have a successful season then you've got to have goals coming from all areas of the team. Neal Trotman got one last week and we've got goals in us from midfield too, but Lambert is also banging them in all over the place so it's good.
"The camp is confident but we're taking it one game at a time. The players are molding together well and we're getting to know one another so we'll see where it takes us but we've got our own ambitions.
"The manager and the players are new but it's a hard graft in training and I think that comes out in the performances that we give on a Saturday."
Saints overcame a difficult patch in the game and the former Colchester captain felt that preparation off the pitch helped them through.
"We had a chance to go 3-0 up before half time and a good couple of chances second half to perhaps kill the game off but they got a goal back and made it a little bit dodgy for us. I think it was comfortable for us in the end though.
"We work on things in training like changing shape when we need to, say if we're chasing the game or if we are ahead so we're pretty confident on those aspects.
"Confidence comes from winning games and I think that takes us off the bottom of the league. We passed the ball well and we're looking very solid now which is an improvement.
"It was a nice win today we played some good stuff and we fully deserved to win so it makes the journey home a bit easier."
Hammond also insisted that neither he nor the team will be getting carried away with the result but admitted that league table will make a little easier reading.
"It's great because it's not nice to look at the league table and see the team at the bottom but we're still taking it a game at a time at the moment.
"I'm pleased for David Connolly too, he's been working hard at the training ground and if you've been down there you will have seen that his finishing is fantastic. Today he had one chance and got one goal so he looks like a good signing for us.
"I've always got my own little target in mind for goals but I keep that to myself. I'll tell you if I make it!"
