Lambert Aiming Higher

Posted on: Mon 14 Dec 2009

Double goal scoring hero Rickie Lambert feels like he can score in every game at the moment.

The 27 year-old striker hit a fine brace of goals against Leyton Orient to take his tally for the season to twelve, and he has now set his eyes on matching the division high total that he achieved last season.

"I'm going to try as hard as I can," he stated. "Obviously I want to score in every game because I feel like I can score in every game at the minute with the team that I'm in. I've got good players around me so there's no reason why I can't.

"It will be hard because 29 is a lot of goals, but I'm not saying it's going to be easy and if I get anywhere near that number I'll be happy. If we continue to play as we have been though, then I will carry on getting chances which suits me."

Lambert was confident going into the game having scored against the O's earlier in the season for his former side, Bristol Rovers.

"I knew that if I got a chance I was going to score here," he revealed. "It was great play by the lads for the first goal, a great ball in from Adam which I slotted in and the second one just dropped perfectly.

"The second was a good goal, I just swung my left foot at it, thankfully I caught it perfect and when I looked up I saw it hit the back of the net.

"It was a big relief because we deserved at least a draw out of the game. The spirit between the lads is brilliant and it was great to see the fans going wild when we got the second goal.

"Before the game we wanted to win it but you've got to look at the circumstances of the match, we went two goals down which I don't think we deserved, so you have to look at it, accept it and be happy with a point I think."

Lambert also praised the character and the discipline of Saints which gave the score line a little more justice.

"The best thing that came out was the spirit of the team because at 2-0 down we kept on creating chances. When they weren't going in some teams might have just folded, but we kept going and were unlucky not to get a winner.

"We always knew there would be a way back into the game if we didn't stop. We knew we just needed to get the first one, but I don't think that might have happened for us at the start of the season, so it shows you how far we've come in a few weeks."
