Saints recorded a 3-1 win at Victoria Park thanks to goals from Adam Lallana and Rickie Lambert.
Hartlepool took the lead in the game, but Lallana's tenth goal of the season squared things up before half time. Saints took the lead shortly after the re-start with Lallana grabbing his second, a fine long range effort mirroring David Connolly's effort at the weekend. Lambert pounced on a mistake by Pools' 'keeper Scott Flinders to poach a third.
The win came at a cost though for Alan Pardew's side as goalkeeper Kelvin Davis suffered what turned out to be a tweaked groin injury on the hour mark, which is likely to rule the club captain out until the New Year. A spate of bookings were also picked up towards the end of the match around the time that United's Richie Jones was dismissed for a second yellow card.
