Pardew Gets 'Ugly' Win
Alan Pardew felt his side beat their opponents and the weather conditions to record an 'ugly' win in Hartlepool.
The Saints manager praised the way that the team dug in and stuck to their game in order to recover from an early setback at Victoria Park when the hosts took a 16th minute lead.
"When you come away to Hartlepool one of the things you don't need is the wind blowing down the length of the pitch which made a mockery of the game at times," Pardew highlighted.
"I didn't think we used the wind particularly well in the first half but they got a good goal, they worked it well and we were a goal behind. We showed great resilience, got a great goal ourselves from Adam again and then second half they couldn't sue the wind.
"The wind was very difficult to judge because it was swirling at times and we have to thank Adam for a brilliant goal to give us a leg up in the game. From that moment on we felt comfortable but we still needed Kelvin to make two fantastic saves.
"They gifted us a goal which gave us a nice cushion and it was a shame there was a bad challenge and a bit of flare up at the end.
"I thought it was the sort of match Southampton over the last 20 years never mind the last couple of years would have lost.
"We really had to dig in and show some character - head it, kick it and be ugly. It was an ugly win."
A brace of goals from Adam Lallana takes the number of goals scored by the 21 year-old this season to eleven and the manager is delighted to see the youngster's hard work pay off on the pitch.
"His goal tally says it all. He got two all of last season and he's got eleven now.
"He's one of the first names on the teamsheet and his work rate and diligence was as good as anyone in the team, so you can't ask for any more."
The win came at a cost however, with Pardew offering his sympathy to Kelvin Davis, who suffered a groin injury which forced the 'keeper off in the second half and is likely to keep him out until the New Year.
"Kelv will definitely be out, probably over Christmas," he confirmed. "It's a shame for Kelv because he hasn't had a lot do but he made two great saves and can at least take some comfort from that.
"He was feeling it and he wanted to play on, but as soon as he was kicking into the wind he was always going to be in trouble.
"Maybe we should have taken him off at half time but it's tough on him. He's obviously got a pull in his groin and it's not easy to cure.
"We'll run a lot of games with Bart who has had one game for us and was terrific in that game.
"He came on and looked calm. He's quite a cool guy so I don't think he's going to get fazed by it all and we look forward to seeing him in the team."
