Manager's Expectations
Alan Pardew has hailed the quality of his squad ahead of Tuesday's match against Wycombe Wanderers.
The manager believes he is getting players into the habit of making vital contributions at the right times which is crucial to his side's chances of success this season.
"You just want for when Southampton players put on their shirt for them to know what their job is, and know what the values are that we now expect," he explained.
"The values may have dropped last year, and when you are not winning games it is easy for that to happen, and difficult to get it back. It has taken a while to instil that in the whole group, but now I look to the bench and the players coming on influence the game, whereas in the past that didn't happen.
"If we bring a sub on now there is an impact. Michail Antonio, Papa when he came on the other day, David Connolly, Mills, etc so we are having the right kind of performance level throughout the squad.
"We are trying to seep that through the Club, to the reserves and to the Academy. Jason Dodd has been brought in to try and put that into their game and we want that same mentality to grow and grow and grow until you get to the level where it's just inbred."
The winning mentality has shone through in cup competitions this season, and Pardew thinks his side are showing signs of maintaining that run for a while longer.
"It's difficult because success breeds more games. We are still in two cup competitions so I think it is probably a good thing as the most important thing right now for this team to get used to winning in different scenarios, how to win, how to see games out and how to bring games back in our favour.
"We did that against Hartlepool, we went a goal down away from home on a really tricky evening, but won comfortably in the end. You can only learn that together as a group, you can't force that learning, you just have to give them the ideas and the game plan that I suggest will work for them. Ultimately it's the players that go out and do their bit.
"I just felt that we showed a good attitude this week, as with the Brighton game, but with it being on TV unfortunately meant that all the players and their contacts would have seen a really sub-standard performance from us after such a great run in the league. The players didn't deserve that profile, but they responded and we have had a terrific game against Norwich under our belts where we gave as good as we got and could have won it, and then we had the two wins, so we have responded perfectly."
Next up for Saints is the visit of Wycombe Wanderers, a side going into the game with back-to-back victories behind them.
"They have picked up," Pardew noted. "They've changed their formation, kept a few clean sheets, and look a bit more solid. They've certainly stepped up from the Huddersfield game, which was not a particularly great game for them.
"It's a bit like the Brighton game for ourselves and we have had to do the same. Both of us have come into it on a little bit of form so I think it will be a good game.
"It's almost a carbon copy in terms of the league positions so I don't want us to fall flat on our face again, I want to put in the same sort of performance as Hartlepool and win. That's what I expect and I am hoping that the players deliver that."
