Holmes Gets His Reward
Lee Holmes is pleased to be back in the fold after making his first start of the season at Millwall.
The winger completed the full 90 minutes on his return which came as a reward for his hard work on the training pitch, having not started a game for nearly a year.
"It was great to be out there playing again," he said. "It's been a while since I started a game, but I feel OK physically, so that is a massive bonus for me from this game.
"Over the last three-four weeks I've felt great. I've been training hard and doing as much as I can to get back into the team so it was nice to get that reward today."
The 22 year-old added that now he has come back into the side, he is aiming to stay there and having a number of games in a short space of time will not affect him.
"Every day that I train and every game that I get a chance in I try my best and if that helps me to get into the gaffer's good books then great, but I'll keep training the way I have been for the last twelve weeks or so and see where it takes me.
"I'm not going to back out of any games just because I've not played for a while. The more games I have the better I'll become fitness wise and physically I'll be getting stronger so it will be beneficial to myself to play in games.
"I can confidently say that I'm a fit man and I won't have many problems from now until the end of the season."
The last gasp draw at the Den proved how tough a game it was for Holmes to make his comeback in, but the former Derby man felt that Saints will take a lot from it.
"It was a battle from the first whistle and we knew that was going to be the case.
"Every team that comes here expects the same and we were no different. It was a hard graft, but we did really well even though it was a kick in the teeth to not come away with three points, but I think we battled well and we will come away with some positives.
"It's never nice to concede in that way, it can feel like you've lost, but we will take the positives from it so we'll take that, look at it and see where we can improve."
Holmes also reflected on the last twelve months or so at the Club, and is impressed with the way that things have been going both on and off the pitch.
"We're starting to become a winning team and that's a great thing. We've not cracked it yet, but we're on the right track to becoming a team that hates losing and wants to win every game, so to get that in the dressing room is obviously a great feeling. We're going into every game thinking we're going to win or trying to win so it's a good feeling amongst the lads."
