Adam Out To Keep His Place

Posted on: Tue 26 Jan 2010

Adam Lallana has welcomed further competition in Saints' forward line.

The 21 year-old is aware of the threat to his place in the side following the arrival of Lee Barnard and return of Lee Holmes into the team.

"It's what you want as player to have options so it's going to make you play better if you're not performing you'll quickly find yourself out of the team," the versatile attacker explained. "We needed another striker really because Lambert's done so much work this season and he's been brilliant for us so it's good to give him a bit more support.

"It (competition) is healthy. It just means the standard of training is going to be better and if you find yourself out of the team you have to work that much harder to get back into the team. With the amount of games that we're playing we'll need all of our players in case we get any injuries.

"There are a few new faces but everyone is gelling together nicely. We've got a lot of games coming up which means we haven't been training as much as we would from Saturday to Saturday, but the mood is good and whilst we've got big cup games coming up, we've got to get back to winning ways in the league."

Saints travel to Brentford in League One this evening hoping to better the 1-1 draw at St. Mary's earlier in the campaign.

"We'll be going there to win. It's a tough place to go, they've got a good home record but you've just got to get it into your head before the game that you're here for three points.

"I'm sure we'll take our full allocation up there. The fans have been great this season and it's a nice short journey for them."

The youngster added that whilst the Cup draw has been mentioned in the dressing room, the forthcoming matches in League One will take priority for now.

"It's just game after game at the moment which is what you want as a player, so as long as you go wholehearted into every game and concentrate on each one then there's no distraction. It's something to look forward to yes, but the league is our bread and butter, so we've got to get back to that on Tuesday.

"Nearer the time there'll be a lot of talk about it because we've got a big game ahead of us in the league on Tuesday night that we need to get our heads focused on.

"The lads definitely think we can win and get into the next round, but that's what you want to do regardless of who we're playing, it will be tough though because they're in the Premiership. We all know that there are problems off the pitch as we have had previously, but on the day it will be an interesting game."
