Papa Shows The Way To Go

Posted on: Mon 01 Feb 2010

Papa Waigo was delighted to score against Stockport and aims to make Alan Pardew's job an even tougher one.

The Senegalese forward on loan from Fiorentina notched his first goal since Boxing Day with the second strike in a 2-0 home win, just a few minutes after his introduction from the substitutes' bench.

"I came on to the pitch with a lot of motivation to show the gaffer what I can do and getting a goal was good. I missed two chances but I never gave up and knew that I would score," he said afterwards.

"Of course I want to play in every game but I never give up, and I aim to make the manager have a difficult decision. I hope that my contribution today will make the manager very happy."

Morgan Schneiderlin translated the interview to Saints Player for the front man and the young French midfielder was equally pleased to see his teammate make such an impact on the match.

"Papa's entrance turned the game completely because he is a great player and he had a great ambition to change the game today. I think that his movement, energy and technique saw him do a great job for us and I'm really happy for him because he has not played a lot lately. It was important to him to find his confidence and I'm happy that he has.

"It was really important to win, because we spoke about them before the game as being a team which is bottom of the league and it being a game that we were expected to win. The first half was a bit difficult, we didn't play our game but in the second half we did better but the important thing was the result and we got a win which is what we're aiming to do in every game."

Schneiderlin acknowledged that the play-offs remain the target for the season and claims that other teams in League One should be wary of Saints.

"Even when we have drawn games, the play-offs remain an ambition because we have a great squad and the manager has brought in some good players who are really talented so we know what this season is all about," he said.

"We are about ten points away from sixth place and whilst it will be hard, it is still possible and whilst it is still possible, anything can happen.

"We are a big Club and we feel that when we go to Stockport or to MK Dons, everyone is a bit scared of us and make plans for us. I think for Stockport this was the game of the season for them but every game is difficult and we have to prove that we are the boss of the league."

The Frenchman was also buoyed by the signing of Jason Puncheon earlier today.

"I've seen him play twice against us and I think that he has a great energy on the pitch, he dribbles a lot, he takes on players and I think that's a great option for us and I wish him all the best for this season and we will accommodate him as well as possible."
