Jason Puncheon says that the level of ambition amongst his new teammates has heightened his own determination.
The explosive winger, who notched his first Saints goal on Saturday, is delighted to have a team around him which is capable of producing the sort of results and performances which Alan Pardew's side gave against Walsall at the weekend.
"There's a great desire in the squad," he affirmed. "People say that we're seventeen points behind (the play-offs), but it's not like it hasn't happened before, and if we can go into each game the same way that we have been playing, then we'll get there.
"I've only been here and month and played in four games, but I knew that the scoreline from Saturday was due to come soon. It's come against Walsall but now we've got to take that on to Huddersfield.
"It's also great when you've got two strikers like Rickie Lambert and Lee Barnard who are willing runners and are going to get the ball down and play with Adam Lallana as well. Not only that, we've got a solid back four with a Premiership 'keeper behind them. You've got Schneiderlin and Hammond in there too so it's a good team to be a part of.
"That does give me a license, but you've got to do the other side of the game. Getting back is important because there are always going to be periods in games where you've got to get back and grind for the team."
Puncheon arrived at St. Mary's from Plymouth Argyle in January having spent the first half of the season on loan at MK Dons, and has wasted no time settling in to his new surrounds despite Saturday being his home debut after three successive away league games.
"It has been a home from home. Everyone has been welcoming me in, all of the lads have been quality and the backroom staff have been good with me as well.
"I was pleased to get my first goal for the Club on Saturday, but I felt that I should have scored already a couple of games ago. However, the most important thing was to get three points on the board, and that's what we did.
"It's a big stage for me to play in front of a crowd like that, and it's a good chance to show the fans what I can do, but as I say, the most important thing was the three points."
The visit of sixth placed Huddersfield Town to the south coast on Tuesday is a fixture the former Barnet man knows well from the Terriers' trip to stadium:mk earlier in the campaign.
"I played against them at home with MK Dons and lost 3-2. They were at it and their strikers worked hard.
"They are strong, quick and they do have the technical ability when they need it, so I wouldn't say that they are an average League One side, they've got good Championship players in their team as well.
"They're not up there for no reason. They're a good team with two good strikers, but at the same time Huddersfield are going to be coming here thinking about Southampton. We're not going to be thinking about Huddersfield, it's about what we do on the day, because as long as we hit the races like we can do then we'll win the game.
"We've got to aim for where we want to go and take each game as it comes. Huddersfield is a big game, but as long as we do what we need to do we will win it."
