Manager Happy To Fine Tune

Posted on: Sat 06 Mar 2010

Alan Pardew hopes that the fine tuning he is applying to his squad will help to keep his winning team fresh.

The manager has prepared his Saints side for the trip to Tranmere on Saturday with the idea of building up momentum at the forefront of his thoughts.

"You don't want to try and change too much," he told Saints Player. "You don't want to start complicating it or look for something that will improve us. We are playing well and we are in good form, so it is now about keeping all the things together. You have to point out that this is what we are doing well, and just give them little nudges here and there of what we are doing well, without trying to add to it too much.

"When the team is in good form you just want the games to come thick and fast. You can never be happy with managers can you!? They are always changing their opinion. We have had a really good week, three clean sheets out of four games and three great victories. I feel that the team is growing, it's getting stronger and we are looking forward to Tranmere.

"We are expected to win with the form that we are in and everyone will be astonished if we don't. But that is what football is, we don't want to slip up but it can happen so you can never say never, but obviously we feel like we can win the game.

"We know there is a question mark against us, it will be a difficult pitch and a type of opposition that we haven't done well against. We are very keen to put that right."

One of the platforms for success has been a solid back line, and Pardew has been delighted with the contributions of his centre back pairings, including new arrival José Fonte.

"Everytime I went to scout him for us I felt that not only was he a very good player, but he also had a very good temperament. He very rarely gets booked, very rarely loses his focus, he doesn't get intimidated by the referee or the opposition so you get a consistency of performance. We made a statement with his signing, as we did with Rickie Lambert, and so far I couldn't be more pleased with how he has settled into our team.

"I think Radhi was a little bit comfortable at the time. He was producing good displays, but could have produced great displays which he has in the last three or four. Dan (Seaborne) is pushing hard as well, so we have nice competition in that area."

Seaborne got a late run out on Tuesday evening and a further 45 minutes in the reserves on Wednesday as he returned from a knee injury. The gaffer confirmed that the former Exeter City captain has fully recovered to be involved again this weekend.

"Dan will be fine. Lloydy and David Connolly are still trying to get back, Connolly is looking good, he trained again today and looked like he will be available soon, but we won't take him this Saturday. Puncheon took a knock this morning, a cut, but nothing really to worry about unless he gets an infection in that so we are ok."
