Kelvin - 'Tonight Is An Opportunity'

Posted on: Wed 17 Mar 2010

Kelvin Davis is happy to be facing a team currently in the position that Saints want to be in at the end of the season.

The goalkeeper and Club captain has witnessed the side take the scalps of Huddersfield and more recently Leeds, at St. Mary's which has given Alan Pardew's men confidence going into another home game against a top six team this evening.

"I think we're playing very well at the moment, especially at home," Davis told Saints Player. "Results have shown that, and we got another clean sheet at the weekend as well so defensively we're getting it right and we're scoring goals too.

"We're going into games at the moment thinking, 'we must win today,' and then we're walking out of the ground saying, 'we must win on Tuesday,' that's the situation that we're in. We understand that and we're determined to achieve that.

"We've got the privilege of playing against a couple of teams above us, so we can make ground on them if we can win and Tuesday night against Swindon is an opportunity to do that.

"Wins (against the top teams) give you self belief and belief in the team and everything that we're trying to do which we constantly have to do to achieve things. We've felt that when we've beaten those teams above us, everything has been spot on so it's a pat on the back for everyone at the Club, and it keeps everyone rolling forward, you reassert yourself that you are doing the right things and you are working on the right things. If you work as hard as you can you will get the rewards which makes it feel worth it and we want to continue that winning feeling.

"I think we've certainly become a much more solid team and we're now sort of tweaking those little things. On Saturday we showed plenty of communication and good decision making, be it simple clearances or that special bit of play which creates chances. We're making more right decisions and good ones which I think again is down to what we do on the training ground, and the fact that we're playing more as a team."

The visit of Swindon Town is likely to test that theory, and Kelvin believes that the Robins deserve to be where they are at the moment based on what he has seen.

"They have kept on picking up those wins in tough games. We've looked at them and thought we might make up some ground on them in some weeks and we haven't, so they're continuing to win games so we need to win to make sure that they stop that.

"They're in there for a reason and they've picked up points by good play and being resilient, so it will be a very big test for us on Tuesday night."
