Hammond Wants To Keep Pressure On

Posted on: Sat 10 Apr 2010

Dean Hammond is looking to send a warning to Saints' play-off rivals this weekend in another exciting home game.

Fifth placed Charlton Athletic visit St. Mary's on Saturday and the skipper hopes the hosts keep the pressure on the teams above with another strong result.

"It'll be a good game I think," he told Saints Player. "Two big clubs against each other, they're a decent team that's in the play-offs and we want to try and catch them, so it's a game that we need to win.

"They're where we want to be - that's the ambition of the Club this season. All we can do in the seven games that are left this season is to try and win those matches and if we get seven wins we've done well, but if we don't then at least we've done our bit. There's no point in other teams slipping up and us not winning games, all we can do is concentrate on ourselves.

"Hopefully we'll put pressure on them because that's all we can do, win our games and then when they slip up we'll take their place. They'll be looking at us, knowing that the pressure is on them because they're in that position which they've worked all season to get into and they'll be worried about us coming through.

"Every team has a blip in their season, but we can't do anything about the other teams and what they do is up to them as along as we win our seven games, so if there's a slip from them then we're right on their toes."

The midfielder has warned Saturday's opponents that Saints are a much improved team than the one which drew at the Valley in the reverse fixture earlier on in the campaign.

"When we went to Charlton earlier in the season I think they were unbeaten. We were 1-0 up and maybe could have won the game but a draw was a fair result. This is a different team now and we've blended together as a squad over the season, the gaffer has changed things and brought a winning mentality in, so we've had a bit of time together, things are different and I think we are now a better team.

"They're a good team too, they pass the ball well and have had a good season otherwise they wouldn't be where they are. They will probably come here to win, but maybe a bit cautious as our home record is good. It should still be an entertaining game which will hopefully end with us getting three points."

A crowd of over 20,000 is expected at St. Mary's and Hammond is hoping Saints use it to their advantage as they have done on numerous occasions this season.

"The crowd will play a massive part, the support we've had this season has been fantastic and the Leeds game was an example of that where there was over 30,000 in the ground, we put in a good performance and maybe could have won the game by more, so hopefully it will be the same this Saturday.

"It's a great atmosphere to play in because it spurs us on and we look forward to it.

"We're on a decent run and we look to win every game anyway at home in front of big crowds which is fantastic for us as I said, so we'll try our best to entertain them."
