Success Starts At Home

Alan Pardew wants to recreate some of the memorable moments from his first season in charge on Saturday.

The manager has seen some impressive performances from the team at St. Mary's this term, and is keen to put on another show to end the campaign on a high.

"I have enjoyed the home victories," he told Saints Player. "Looking at our record we just need to do a slight improvement next season and that will be good enough, it's our away form that we need to improve quite strongly. I think we only lost six games away, but we didn't win enough as we drew too many, so that is something we will need to improve.

"I enjoyed the home victories against the likes of Leeds and Charlton, when we had our best team and were in good form. The performance of the season outside of Wembley would have to be Huddersfield, because they are a good side who came here in really good form and we just blew them away.

"I think it's been a foundation season really. We've put in some really strong roots and we look like a team on the up and I think that's good for recruiting and for the belief in the town.

"I'm pleased that we have got a very strong team now and a good belief, it's a nice environment to come into work."

It doesn't seem too long ago that Saints were kicking off the League One season on minus ten points in front of the Sky Sports cameras against Millwall, but now 45 league games and a considerable amount of cup matches later, the end is in sight.

"It does seem quick now when you stand here at the end of the season, but there were parts of the season when I thought it was never going to end. We played a lot of games and struggled, especially in the first half of the season.

"I think the start of the season was the key because those first six or seven games we ended up twenty or maybe twenty-five points behind the top team. It was going to be a hell of an ask from there, and we made a good fist of it, but that ultimately cost us. It just goes to show, in any season a five game period can cost you, and you need to focus for the whole season if you are going to get promoted.

"There have been a few occasions I've been stood on the sidelines and it just hasn't worked, the game plan that we had. Obviously the opposition have their own views on how the game should be played and they dictate sometimes, so that's something that sticks in my mind, but that's just the manager's mind."

Having topped the form table for the end to the campaign, Pardew knows that the expectation will be on his side from the first whistle next season, and he will be instilling his strategy over the summer months to prepare his squad for that challenge.

"It is something we need to talk about in pre-season and make sure that we are mentally strong enough to cope with the pressure, and the criticism that will come our way.

"Certainly the home games will not be so easy in terms of the mood of the stadium because they will expect us to win, we have set our own standards and if we drop below them the fans are the first people to tell you whether you are in Southampton or the Hebrides.

"You need to be aware of that, cope with it and be strong enough to stick to the game plan until such time that the bench change the game plan and then you need to have a calm mind to be able to change tactically, without the influence of negativity from the stands."
