Day Five

After the fun and games of Sunday, it was business as usual for the squad on Monday as they headed back to the training pitch, continuing to focus on their match fitness after a long summer break.

Alan Pardew soon had the squad working up a sweat as the players were sent running laps of the training ground's athletics track. With the first of the team's two matches on Tuesday (against FC Thun), you could have been forgiven for thinking that the session that followed would have been a light one, but with Wally Downes shouting orders from the touchline there was nothing half-hearted about any of the football on show.

Aaron Martin looked steady and assured at the back, clearly buoyed by his success in yesterday's "Superstars Challenge", whilst David Connolly was regularly finding the back of the net with impressive accuracy.

As the first session drew to a close, Dean Wilkins took charge of the strikers who continued working for an extra half an hour on their finishing. With Wilkins setting each player on the edge of the box Rickie Lambert, David Connolly, Lee Barnard, Lee Holmes, Jason Puncheon and Dean Hammond took it in turns to fire in efforts on goal from in and around the area.

Lambert then spent an extra five minutes working on free kicks from distance, showing that he had not lost his goalscoring touch over the summer as he slammed the ball into all four corners of the goal.

On the way back to the hotel a number of players stopped off at the same bridge that had featured in yesterday's swimming event, choosing a dive into the ice cold canal over a dunk in the dreaded plunge pool, in an attempt at bringing down their body temperature on another sweltering day in Interlaken.
