Day Nine
With just one day to go before the team's final match of their overseas training camp, against FC Sochaux in Fribourg, training was an upbeat affair with the whole squad looking to avenge Tuesday's defeat to FC Thun.
Alan Pardew had revealed after the Thun match that the game had possibly been a little too much for the squad so early into their pre-season campaign, bearing in mind the rigours of three training sessions a day in the searing Interlaken sunshine. Perhaps with that in mind, the squad only had one recognised training session on Friday which took part in the morning to take advantage of the relatively cool conditions.

That said, the squad were still given another tough workout as training was split into two main events. Senior Strength & Conditioning Coach Nick Harvey took a small group of players to one side and soon had them running around the track working up a sweat.

Meanwhile, Alan Pardew took the rest of the squad onto the training pitch, playing a high intensity game of 2 vs 2 on half a pitch that was designed at encouraging the players to make runs off the ball to open up the pitch.
With new signing Danny Butterfield watching on from the sidelines as he awaited confirmation of his signing, the groups regularly rotated to ensure that every player had one spell on the track and two on the training pitch.

With temperatures beginning to rise an end was called to the session, and it was time to make the short bike ride back through Interlaken to the hotel where the squad headed straight to the hotel spa for an extended session in the pool. This also served as a great recovery session from the exertions of the morning workout, as the squad were required to spend time in the ice cold plunge pool to help restrict any muscle fatigue.

The players take a breather after another exhausting training session |
After a few hours to themselves, it was soon back to work as Dean Wilkins lead the squad on a lengthy bike ride out of Interlaken and into a neighbouring town. Taking in many of the regions steep inclines, it provided the perfect activity to keep the players occupied and ensure that all would have a good night's sleep ahead of the Sochaux match the following day.
