Sutton 1-1 Saints - Report

Posted on: Sat 24 Jul 2010

The President's Trophy was shared as Saints and Sutton played out a 1-1 draw on Saturday afternoon.

As promised Alan Pardew fielded a strong team against the Ryman League side, for the special memorial match, and although the visitors' superior fitness showed, nothing could separate the two sides in terms of the result.

Dean Hammond led the side out on a warm day at Gander Green Lane with the conditions similar to the sort of climate the team recently experienced in Switzerland.

As a result, the match started at a slightly slower tempo with the only early chance of note for Saints coming from the captain as he headed over from Rickie Lambert's cross from the right in the seventh minute.

The non leaguers grew into the game and levelled the chance count on 13 when Fola Orilonishe forced a low save from Kelvin Davis on the left side of the area.

Saints suffered a blow on 20 minutes when Ryan Dickson, who had been playing in a more advanced role, had to make way as he succumbed to what looked like a groin injury. He was replaced by Ryan Doble, who immediately gave more support to Lambert in attack.

However, just a few moments later, the hosts took the lead with an opportunist goal as forward Craig Dundas snuck in behind the backline on to a loose ball and drew a low shot past Davis to make it 1-0.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain tried to spark Saints back into life after conceding the goal with some lively runs on the right, but clear opportunities remained at a premium from either side.

The closes the visitors came in the opening 45 came off the back of a corner on the right which Jaidi cut back to Lambert, but the striker fired wide just past the half hour mark.

Half Time: Sutton 1-0 Saints

Saints made three changes at the break with Davis, Harding and Hammond all making way for Bartosz Bialkowski, Joseph Mills and Paul Wotton, with Wotton also taking on the captain's armband.

And less than three minutes after the re-start the visitors were level from a familiar source.
Schneiderlin was brought down on the left hand side of the area, but despite the slightly acute angle, Lambert swung a vicious low effort that ended up in the far corner as it nestled in the back of the net.

Saints nearly slipped up two minutes later though as Bradley Woods-Garness struck the base of the post as he shot across Bialkowski for an effort that looked like being a goal all the way until rebounded out to safety.

As both teams stepped up the pressure, the visitors went close on 53 when Lambert lined up another set piece from 30 yards which flew just wide before Lee Holmes headed Danny Butterfield's cross from the right wide at the far post.

Saints then switched to a rigid 4-4-2 with Barnard partnering Lambert in attack as the January signing from Southend replaced Doble, who had filled the slot in midfield since Dickson went off.

On 70 Barnard got his first sight of goal as Lambert played him in on the right, but with the angle against him, the blonde haired frontman saw his low shot held by Kevin Scriven in the Sutton goal.

The visitors went close again on 75 as Barnard's persistence allowed Lambert to get a shot in which was blocked, but only as far as Wotton on the edge of the box, but the midfielder's shot ended up clearing the bar.

Lambert saw a free-kick go over the top before Holmes connected to another Butterfield cross with his head, only to see the 'keeper hold on to his effort from close range.

Inside the last ten minutes, Oxlade-Chamberlain saw his firm shot parried away and Wotton was denied from six yards as the scores finished level at Gander Green Lane.
